My story - Bullied for "Sounding Gay"



I was beaten and ostracized every single day my freshman year. Why, Because my voice made me "sound gay". I admit I wish I had a deeper voice, but I never knew how vicious people were until I moved from Arizona to a small town in Nebraska. Immediately I was perceived to be gay. I talked gay and so I had to be gay, right? I did not even know for sure at that time. I had been raised a nice Lutheran boy who was only supposed to think about girls and having sex after marriage. I was conflicted in that area, but I never overtly looked at guys. But, because of my voice, I would be pushed down, kicked, spit on, beaten, and stuffed in a locker (being 5'4" it was not hard) everyday. I began to think of myself as not good enough and that if i could just fix my voice to "their" standards, I could be normal. I truly lost my voice, so to speak, because I was so afraid to say anything. I tried gargling and even swallowing diluted bleach and ammonia in hopes of making my voice deeper. Of course that did not work. Neither did a long metal ruler down my throat trying to get to my voice box, to scar it. I was desperate. Suicide was so much a part of my thoughts during my freshman year, just to escape the pain, both physically and mentally. I have a scar on the top of my wrist where I cut myself an inch long vertically along a vein. I do not really think it was to die, but it was at a point where the beatings did not even hurt anymore. It was either die or show them I was worth something and could be beat on, but not beat down. My remaining high school years were thankfully spent at a Catholic High School.

Now, I am 41 years old and I can think of those days and the pain is still there, not of suicide, just of what it felt like. Today, I have Epilepsy and also a nerve disorder. I did not back then, but there are so many students with disabilities who are likely to be bullied. If they are LGBT, are they more likely to stay closeted about it for fear of being harassed or bullied because of their sexual orientation or gender identity also? Students with disabilities are bullied everyday, and it is not reported or ignored. Many do commit suicide and their stories need to be told too.

I am scouting a location for an anti-bullying crisis/peer support line where LGBT and Students with disabilities could call, IM, chat, or email about bullying. There will be peer to peer mentoring along with crisis intervention. No one's voices should be silenced and no one should be bullied to death.

Anti-bullying crisis and peer support line

ReachOut USA will be adding a national program to help stop the needless loss of life and torment of millions students who sometime feel they have no one to turn to, not even the very school officials that are there to protect them. 

We will be building a nationwide anti-bullying crisis and peer support line for LGBT and/or disabled students. 

The rate of bullying and suicide among students with disabilities, of all types, is mainly anecdotal, and there have only been studies done on students with development disabilities. From advocates “in the field”, the rate is increasing yearly, not just of bullying, but attempted and completed suicides. Considering too, that 1 out of 5 people who are LGBT may also have a disability, they have higher risk of being tormented into not returning to school, low self esteem, or taking their life.

The idea behind the need for the anti-bullying crisis and peer support line is very solid. We will need a location for it plus volunteers or staff. We will need sponsors and grant money for it, and I know that having an organization that are already trained in crisis support involved is essential, but there are also other aspects. Some people are not in suicide crisis, but need someone to talk to who has experience the same thing, and resources for help in their area. Plus we need to pull in organizations from both Communities to form specified trainings or curriculums for schools on how to respond to bullying to students that are LGBT and/or disabled. We will also need to find an organization to train the LGBT organizations on disability aspects and the IL Philosophy so they a frame of reference and understanding when disabled students call in. The peer support aspect will also help foster a mentoring program for LGBT disabled students, as there is not one in existence currently. The Safe Schools Coalition in Seattle is willing to bring in trainers to teach any volunteers or staff how to be intervention specialists when I get the anti-bullying program going and will partner with me. 

Please Stay tuned for further information as we start a plan of action. I want to have everything in place by the end of July to start training staff so they are ready for the school year.

Power and Control Wheels - For People with Disabilities and LGBT Individuals


Power and Control Wheels have been developed to show the extremes and subtleties that abusers use to gain control over their victims, more times than not, their "loved ones", or people in their care.

- Notice the similarities in the Power and Control Wheels for People with disabilities and LGBT individuals. Then notice the differences and combine the two wheels. Because if you are LGBT and disabled, you are more likely to be a victim of abuse or sexual assault.

Town Hall / Mixer for LGBT and Disabled Community

Breaking Barriers to Equality

1 in 5 people in the LGBT Community have a disability or chronic disease.
This town hall forum will bring together leading members of the Disability and LGBT Communities to discuss common issues to unite us in a stronger effort towards equality for all people.

Some topics to be discussed:
· Employment: Safe workplaces, equal opportunities, fair hiring practices, non-discrimination policies.

· Accessibility: (how both communities can work together to make themselves fully accessible to each other, which also includes outreach)

· Healthcare Reform Issues: Community First Choice would allow that services must be provided in a home or community setting based on a written plan, instead of being forced into a nursing home because of a disability or chronic illness.

· Violence/Hate Crimes: Issues that affect both communities.

· Equality: Equal protection in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states.

National Equality March

On October 11th, we will march on Washington with one single demand: equal protection for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in all matters governed by civil law in all 50 states.
